RULES IN PRACTICE

Institutional Arbitration Rules.

A guide to the procedural frameworks of leading arbitral institutions, linked to their official rules.

The applicable rules depend on the parties’ agreement and the rules’ application provisions. The institution, the legal seat and the governing law are separate choices. Check official rules and current fee schedules before relying on a particular version.

2026 Arbitration Rules · effective 1 June 2026

International Chamber of Commerce (ICC)

The ICC International Court of Arbitration administers international disputes under the ICC Rules; tribunals, rather than the Court, decide the merits. The 2026 rules include provisions on consolidation and joinder, emergency arbitration, expedited procedure and highly expedited arbitration, subject to their terms. They are a useful choice for parties seeking institutional administration and scrutiny of awards. Confirm the applicable version, dispute value and any party agreement when assessing expedited procedures.

2020 Arbitration Rules · effective 1 October 2020

London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA)

The LCIA administers arbitration under rules covering appointments, case management, evidence, awards and costs. The 2020 rules address confidentiality, data protection and tribunal secretaries, and provide for expedited tribunal formation and emergency arbitrators subject to conditions. Parties may choose an LCIA-administered procedure for international disputes with different seats and governing laws. The separate cost schedule has been updated; a fee change is not a new edition of the procedural rules.

2023 Arbitration Rules · effective 1 January 2023

SCC Arbitration Institute (SCC)

The SCC Arbitration Institute administers commercial and investment disputes where parties have selected its services. Its 2023 Arbitration Rules address appointments, joinder, multiple contracts, consolidation, case management and awards, and include an emergency-arbitrator procedure. A separate set of SCC expedited rules is available. Parties considering an SCC clause should identify the desired rules and check the agreement and current schedules, especially for urgent relief or related disputes.

Seventh edition · effective 1 January 2025

Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC)

SIAC administers international arbitration and its 2025 rules provide for streamlined and expedited procedures, preliminary determination, coordinated proceedings and emergency-arbitrator relief. They also address electronic case management and tribunal secretaries. Parties may select SIAC where its administrative support and mechanisms for urgent or related matters suit the dispute. SIAC administration does not itself determine the legal seat or governing law; check the clause and rules’ applicability provisions.

Check the official rules, applicable schedules and practice notes against the parties’ agreement.

China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC)

CIETAC administers international and domestic arbitration. Its 2024 Arbitration Rules, the tenth edition, took effect on 1 January 2024 and address matters including emergency arbitrators, early dismissal, third-party funding disclosure and electronic service, subject to their terms and applicable law. Parties with China-connected or other cross-border disputes may consider CIETAC’s institutional framework. Its separate procedures for administering UNCITRAL cases should not be confused with a replacement edition of these rules.

2022 Arbitration Rules · effective 21 March 2022

Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC)

DIAC administers disputes under its 2022 Arbitration Rules, which cover constitution of the tribunal, procedure, awards and mechanisms for expedited proceedings and emergency relief. The framework is relevant to disputes connected with Dubai and the wider region, while accommodating seats chosen or determined under the rules. Parties should distinguish DIAC administration from the law of the seat: the UAE federal, DIFC and other frameworks are not interchangeable.

International procedures · effective 1 March 2021

ICSID Convention Arbitration Rules · effective 1 July 2022

International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID)

ICSID administers investment disputes between states and investors where the Convention’s jurisdictional requirements and consent are satisfied. The 2022 Convention Arbitration Rules govern proceedings after registration and include provisions on procedure, transparency, provisional measures and awards. Different rules govern the filing stage and the Additional Facility. For an older case, do not assume the newest rules apply: the Convention generally ties the applicable Arbitration Rules to the date of consent unless parties agree otherwise.

2012 Rules · effective 17 December 2012

Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA)

The PCA provides administrative support for disputes involving states, state entities, international organisations and private parties. Its 2012 Arbitration Rules draw on the UNCITRAL Rules and are accompanied by optional protocols adopted in 2024 and 2026, including for emergency relief and preliminary dismissal. Those protocols require agreement and do not automatically apply to every case. The PCA can also administer proceedings under other rules; identify the instrument selected in the parties’ agreement.
